Update: the LA Fires AND Ways to Take Care of yourself
TRIGGER WARNING: This story mentions difficult and potentially triggering content such as wide-spread wildfires. If this will trigger or harm you in any way, please do not read.
Hello, everyone!
Sorry I haven’t posted in a while. As some of you may know, wildfires are raging like beasts across California, which is my home. And between evacuation orders and anxiety for the towns and people I’ve known my whole life, it’s been hard to find space just to write, to just write something that feels good. And so, while red flames lick the air and toxic smoke unfurls across the gray sky, I will try. I evacuated to Santa Barbara where the sky is calm and the ocean rushes in a sea of white to the shore. It’s beautiful here, the absolute small seaside town escape. And it feels wrong, in a way, to be so far away, to be so safe and distanced while people I care about are losing houses and possessions every day. And if some of you are in similar positions or know people who are, know that my whole heart is with you.
If you want some recommendations as to ways to take care of yourself, I know that sometimes simple lists can be the best, so here is one below:
1. Call a friend or member of your support system. This includes a friend, partner, family member or therapist. Talking to someone, no matter what about, can be so beneficial, and is such a mood booster.
2. If you have access to a kitchen, bake! This one really helps me out when I’m struggling. The precision that comes with baking is lovely and can definitely calms me down when I’m stressed. I love the simplicity of chocolate chip cookies, and when finished, the gooey golden brown circles are a magic of a dessert.
3. Cry it out if you need to. It’s always good to release your emotions in healthy ways.
4. Do your makeup! The simple artistry and routine can be so beneficial, as long as it’s not used in a way where you’re criticizing your appearance. Also, skincare is sooo relaxing and I highly recommend. There’s something about the brightly colored vials and jars, and the serums never fail to relax me as I massage them into my skin. Skincare is especially good if the products are cold!
5. Make your art. This can include singing, spinning melody into song through instrument, reading or reciting a monologue, painting, sewing, writing, you name it!
6. Gently move your body, if you enjoy it and it’s not used in a manner that’s detrimental to your mental health. Stretching can be very relaxing and a feel good tool.
I hope some of these help you, whatever you’re going through. Remember - you are special. You are brave. And, as Coffee says for affirmation, your face was sculpted by the gods. You got this!
Love,
Luna
